How to choose an AI growth agency

The label tells you nothing. Everyone claims it now. What actually separates a real AI growth agency from a wrapper around ChatGPT is how they answer a few specific questions. These are the seven to ask before you sign anything.

Seven glowing nodes descending a connected spine, each marked with a tick — a checklist of seven questions

Every agency has “AI” on the homepage now. The word has stopped being a filter. The way to tell a real operation from a thin one is to ask questions where a good answer has to be specific and an evasive one can only be vague. Here’s what to ask, and what a good answer actually sounds like.

1. How are you priced — and is it tied to my ad spend?

Good answer: a flat fee, or a flat fee plus a performance share tied to your growth. Walk away if: they take a percentage of ad spend. That pays them more the more of your money they spend, which isn’t the same as growing you. We got into why we price a flat fee rather than a cut of spend.

2. Who signs off before anything reaches my brand?

Good answer: a named senior person who reads and approves every output. Walk away if: it’s “the AI handles it,” with no human gate. The real risk was never the AI writing something. It’s that thing going out unread. More on whether you can trust AI to run your marketing.

3. How often do I see results, and in what format?

Good answer: a regular, plain record. A weekly ledger of what was done and what moved, plus a short daily brief. Walk away if: it’s a polished deck once a month and a “let’s hop on a call” every time you ask what actually happened. You want receipts, not reports.

4. Who owns the accounts, data, and content?

Good answer: you do. Your ad accounts, your analytics, your content, all in your name and portable the day you leave. Walk away if: they run everything through their own accounts and you can’t take it with you. That’s a hostage, not a partner.

5. What do the AI agents do, and what do the humans do?

Good answer: a clear split. Agents execute at scale (discovery, drafts, bids, measurement); humans set strategy and approve. If they can draw you the line on a napkin, it’s real. Walk away if: they can’t say what’s automated and what’s human, or “AI” turns out to be a junior with a chatbot. That’s the gap between agentic-native and AI-flavoured.

6. How do you protect my brand voice and quality?

Good answer: they capture your voice up front, an editor reads every piece, and the agents draft far more than ever ships so the weak work gets cut before you see it. Walk away if: the samples all sound like generic AI, or nobody can tell you how an off-brand line actually gets caught.

7. What happens if I leave?

Good answer: a clean handover. You keep the accounts, the data and the work, and there’s no lock-in past a fair notice period. Walk away if: leaving means losing your history, your creative, or access to your own accounts.

The word “AI” has stopped being a filter. The answers to these seven still are.

Red flags to walk away from

Ask the seven, listen for specifics, and you’ll sort the real operations from the wrappers fast. If an agency answers all seven the way you hoped, you’ve probably found a good one. Whoever it turns out to be.

Happy to answer all seven on a call — straight, no deck. Fifteen minutes with the operator who’d run your account and an honest yes or no on whether we’re a fit.
